When done right, small-group instruction is a powerful tool for facilitating student understanding in K-5 mathematics. Throughout the book, best practices for small-group math instruction are addressed in detail, from planning tasks that encourage deep understanding to asking effective questions to engaging learners in meaningful conversations. Readers will learn how teaching mathematics in small groups allows you to differentiate instruction for both remediation and enrichment. The included small-group instruction videos demonstrate the suggested strategies in a real-classroom setting, giving readers the opportunity to see best practice in action.

Develop math-specific instruction strategies for teaching small groups in elementary school:

  • Explore the benefits of small-group math activities and how these activities are unique compared to large-group instruction.
  • Discover the teacher’s and students’ roles in small-group instruction and how teachers can help students develop the skills to fulfill their role.
  • Learn how to apply the general tasks, questions, and evidence (TQE) process to small-group instruction in order to enhance student learning and improve your knowledge of teaching mathematics.
  • View examples of small-group instruction, which provide both math intervention and math enrichment activities for different students.

This book deserves to sit on every math teachers shelf with a bunch of quotes highlighted and a bunch of post it notes attached. It’s that good. If you want to have effective, engaging, differentiated small groups that will help students fully grasp the concept, this book is for you. To be honest, this book has been better than some professional developments I have attended. The videos really helped me to solidify what I read. Buy this book today!

I would highly recommend this book for all teachers, math coaches, and administrators. Making Sense of Mathematics for Teaching the Small Group is an excellent resource for teachers who are looking to provide meaningful small group instruction. The authors, Juli Dixon, Lisa Brooks, and Melissa Carli did a great job of helping educators set the purpose of high-quality small-group math instruction. The book contains tools, resources, examples, and real-world videos to support struggling students. While in small groups, students are encouraged to think critically, take ownership of their learning, and make sense of the math, just as in the other Making Sense of Mathematics books.

Small group instruction is something that teachers, especially at the elementary level, are used to doing. This book helps readers examine WHY they use small group instruction and then provides readers with strategies for how to most effectively engage students in small group instruction that is student-centered and discourse-rich. Further, this book explains the authors' TQE process as it pertains to small group instruction. As a key component of this book, the videos (easily accessed by QR reader) are great and really help tie together the reading with examples! Great job Dixon, Brooks, and Carli!
